THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
A name is a word or phrase given to a person, etc, to be called and known-by, in order to designate and describe the distinguishing and distinctive constitution, character, quality, workings, etc.
Many people who lived before the Lord Jesus Christ were named "Jesus" and many people who lived since his first coming were also named "Jesus" - including today. BUT - there is only ONE Jesus who is the Christ, and he is now the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ who is at the right-hand side of God. Refer to Romans 8:34; Ephesians 1:19-23; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 1:3 and 13.
Regarding the name of the "Lord Jesus Christ" - it includes all that:
the name of "Lord"
and the name of "Jesus"
and the name of "Christ" …
…represent and stand for.
1) The word "Lord" (Greek Kurios) refers to a master or an owner, one who has the authority or authoritative-power, the one from whom the directions and instructions are given and who is to be obeyed, the one who has the dominion over and exercises his lordship in relation to that-which his title of "Lord" or "Master" is being associated.
2) The word "Jesus" (Greek Iesous) is explained in Matthew 1:21 by the Angel Gabriel when he spoke to Joseph.
.21She [Mary] will bring-forth a son and you [Joseph] will call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
"Jesus" means "God saves / Jehovah (Yahweh) the Savior." The Lord Jesus Christ was given the name "Jesus" because he is the one who carried-out God's will to make it available for people to be saved, to be made-safe. It is by means of Jesus, the Christ, that people are able to be saved and thereby have a true and vital spiritual relationship with the only true God. Jesus Christ is God's son – he is alive today! He is now at God's right-hand side, second-in-command to God his Father.
Also, the Hebrew Jehoshua or Joshua is expressed in Greek as Iesous - "Jesus" in English. It is a compound of Jah (for Jehovah - the term used for God when emphasizing His covenant relationship with His people whom He has created, Yahweh) and the word meaning "to save."
3) The word "Christ" (Greek Christos) means the "anointed-one" or "Messiah." In the lands and during the time-period of the writing of the Bible, holy oil was poured on the high priest of God to begin his ministry for God, and it was also used to anoint kings. Many people and things were anointed with holy oil to signify their making holy (sanctified) for a specific purpose, etc, which can be read about in many scriptures in the Bible (refer to Exodus 30:22-33; Acts 2:32-36, 4:27, and 10:38-41). The resurrected Christ continues doing God's will today.
Regarding the Lord Jesus Christ being the son of God - God marked Jesus Christ out as the son of God by raising him up from among the dead-people giving him his spiritual body. God gave him the name that is above every other name, designating the resurrected Jesus being Lord and Christ, and his name includes the name – SON – God’s son; he inherits everything that the firstborn son should inherit from his Father, the only true God. The word ‘son’ emphasizes origin, quality, and essence. The spirit of holiness is the spiritual essence of the resurrected Christ Jesus. Refer to Matthew 3:17, 17:5; John 17:1; Acts 2:21 and 38, 3:6 and 16, 4:7-12 and 30, 9:20, 13:33, 26:23; Romans 1:3, 4 and 9, 5:10, 8:3, 29 and 32; I Corinthians 1:9, chapter 15; II Corinthians 1:19; Galatians 2:20, 4:4 and 6; Ephesians 1:19-23, 4:13; Philippians 2:9 and 10; Colossians 1:13 and 18; I Thessalonians 1:10; II Thessalonians 3:6; Hebrews 1:1-8, 3:6, 4:14, 5:5-10, 6:6, 7:3, 21 and 28, 10:29; II Peter 1:17; I John 1:3 and 7, 2:22-24, 3:8 and 23, 4:9, 10, 14 and 15, 5:5, 9-13 and 20; II John 1:3 and 9; Revelation 2:18.
The phrase "in the name of" something or someone else incorporates the fullness of everything involved with the one named. It lets everyone know that what is spoken and/or done is performed by the power and authority of that person whose name is used, not by the speaker’s own power or authority.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ means:
within the cause and sphere of action of all the authoritative-power, ability, workings, etc,
that God gave to Jesus when He raised him up out-from the dead-people,
and gave him the name that is above every other name,
designating the resurrected Jesus
Reference: Matthew 1:21; Acts 2:21, 36 and 38; 3:6 and 16; 4:7-12, and 30; Romans 1:3 and 4; Ephesians 1:19-23; Philippians 2:9-11; II Thessalonians 3:6; Hebrews 1:1-4.
No person or spirit can use the power or authority of the Lord Jesus Christ without being in agreement with the Lord Jesus Christ (refer to Acts 19:13-10).
The phrase "Jesus Christ" emphasizes his obedience and service to God on a horizontal human level to benefit people.
The phrase "Christ Jesus" emphasizes the truth that the Lord Jesus Christ is the resurrected, anointed-one of God - the Messiah.
Let us read a record from Acts chapters 3 and 4 regarding Peter speaking and doing things in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, after he had received the gift of holy spirit (recorded in Acts chapter 2).
3:1But Peter and John ascended into the temple on the hour of prayer, the ninth (hour), .2and some adult-male being-from-the-beginning lame from his mother's womb was lifted-up whom they put daily towards the door of the temple, the (door) being said (as) Beautiful, to ask a merciful-deed from the (people) journeying into the temple, .3who, having seen Peter and John being about to enter into the temple, asked to receive a merciful-deed.
Peter and John were on their way into the temple at the 3:00 p.m. hour of prayer when this man who was lame from birth asked them for a merciful-deed. This lame man was in need and asked to be given alms by mercy, to be bestowed active-relief withholding any merited judgment and punishment from him.
.4But Peter having gazed-intently into him, together with John, said, "You must observe into us," .5and the (man) held-on to them expecting to receive something from them, .6and Peter said, "Silver and gold does not begin-from me, but that-which I have this-thing I give to you - in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene you must walk," .7and having apprehended him with the right hand he raised him up and with-that his steppings and anklebones were made-solid, .8and (he) leaping-out stood and he walked and went together with them into the temple walking and leaping and speaking-in-praise-of God.
Peter and John fixed their eyes on the lame man. They told the man that he must pay-attention to them and he did this expecting to receive something from them. Peter tells him that he is not the source of money, but what he has he gives to him – “…in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene you must walk.”
In order for Peter to give something to this man, Peter must have it first. Peter had the powerful ability of the gift of holy spirit within him and so he could give the beneficial effects resulting from it working within him to the lame man in accordance with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Having spoken to this man, Peter continues to do as his holy spirit is instructing him. He caught him with his right hand and raised him up, and immediately the man's power to step and his anklebones were made firm and stable. And the man, leaping out from where he had been put, stood up and walked, and he went together with Peter and John into the temple walking around and leaping (as dancing, springing) and speaking in praise of God.
In verse 16 Peter explains:
.16and on the belief of his name, his name made this-person solid whom you view-with-attention and you knew2, and the belief, the (belief) by means of him, gave to him this whole-lot before all of you.
“…based-upon the belief (faith, trust) pertaining to all that is involved in the name of Jesus Christ,
his name made this-person solid (the Lord Jesus Christ’s ability, authority, etc, caused this man to become stable, firm in the physical category)
whom you contemplate with your minds and you perceive,
emphatically the belief by means of him (the faith/trust through Jesus Christ)
gave to the man the whole-lot (the whole allotment, wholeness, entirety of the inheritance)
in the presence of all of you.”
What was the whole allotment that the resurrected Christ gave to him? It was the promise of the Father, the gift of holy spirit, able-power from on high! Not only did this man become healed physically, but he also became a whole person – he became a three-part being with holy spirit-life, soul-life evidenced by his breathing, and a physical body.
This man received what the Lord Jesus Christ made available, both spiritually and physically.
Peter gives further details in Acts chapter 4:
.8Then Peter having been filled of holy spirit said towards them, "Rulers of the people and elders, .9if we today are being judged-up on (the) good-work (done to) a weak man (and) in whom this-person was saved2 - .10it must be known to you all and to all the people of Israel that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene whom you crucified, whom God raised-up out-from dead-people, in this (Jesus) this-person has stood-beside2 before you sound, .11this (Jesus) is 'the stone, the (stone) having been despised by you the builders, the (stone) having become into (the) head of (the) corner', .12and the salvation is not in not-one other-person for neither is there a different name under heaven, the (name) having been given2 among men, in which it is necessary (for) us to be saved."
In response to the religious leaders' investigation and examination being aimed at Peter and John, Peter took his direction from the holy spirit-life which he had received the morning of Pentecost (refer to Acts chapter 2). Now in this situation, he was filled with enough information revealed to him to be able to answer them appropriately. The holy spirit within Peter made known the information to Peter’s mind so he would know exactly what to say and do (refer to I Corinthians chapter 12).
At that time Peter said towards them…
"Rulers of the people and elders,
if/since we today are being investigated by you
on the good-work done (the “good-work” means: the work that is good, the deed or end-product that is well, the result of action utilizing energy producing good effects; this man was saved both with regards to his physical healing now being able to walk, and his spiritual healing by receiving holy spirit, which is being saved spiritually from power of the devil and from receiving the future wrath of God)
to a weak man (infirm, feeble, he lacked strength before he was healed)
and being investigated by you
in whom this man has been saved (made safe) –
it must be personally known to you all present in this meeting and to all the people of Israel that
in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene (refer to Acts 3:6)
whom emphatically you crucified,
whom God raised-up out-from dead-people (refer to Acts 3:15)
in this Jesus (within the sphere of action caused by this one who has been raised up by God)
this man has stood and remains standing beside us in your presence sound (healthy, in good health, well),
this Jesus (Jesus Christ the Nazarene) is
'the stone that was despised (thought nothing of, treated with contempt, set as naught)
by you the builders (the people who were supposed to help build God’s house),
the stone that has become into the head of the corner (the chief-part of the angle; God's true house/temple is founded and based upon the Lord Jesus Christ for without him the building could not be built; refer to Psalm 118:22)',
and the salvation (safety, the standing and state of being saved)
is not within the sphere of action or cause of any other stone/person;
in truth neither is there a different name under heaven given by God among mankind
in which it is necessary for us to be saved."
A person (human-being) can only receive salvation by means of God's son, the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ. The name of any other person or spirit cannot give God's gift of holy spirit to any man or woman.
The following is a passage from the the writing of First (1) John chapter 3:
I John 3:23:
.23And this is His commandment in order that we may believe the name of His son Jesus Christ, and we may love1 one-another according as He gave commandment to us.
This is God’s commandment (a summary of what He commands) for the purpose and result that…
we would believe (have faith in, trust during every occasion, situation, circumstance, etc – we would believe)
the name of God’s son Jesus Christ (relative to the spirit category – the authority and power in force by His son Jesus Christ; refer to Ephesians 1:20-23)
and we would love1 one-another (relative to the category of mankind – be continuously loving each other with God’s kind of love)
just as God gave commandment to us.
The following is a passage from Philippians chapter 2:
.9on-which-account God also super-heightened him and graced to him the name, the (name which is) over every name, .10in order that in the name of Jesus every knee of heavenly and of earthly and of underground (beings) may bend, .11and every tongue may expressly-agree that (the) Lord (is) Jesus Christ into (the) glory of God (the) Father.
It was on account of all that Jesus Christ did for and with God, as described in Philippians 2:6-8, that God emphatically...
super-heightened him (lifted him high above, exalted or elevated him over and beyond; God brought him into a higher position than previously attained by any other being relative-to Himself),
and graced (graciously bestowed) to him the name,
emphatically and specifically the name which is over every name (not just any name, but the name which is above or beyond all/every name),
…for the purpose and result that within the sphere of action of the name of Jesus…
every knee (all/every one of them)
of heavenly beings (the word "heavenly" is plural in the Greek texts and refers to all the beings which belong or pertain to the heavenly-realm, all spirits which are alive above the earth),
and of earthly beings (the word "earthly" is plural in the Greek texts and refers to all the beings which belong or pertain to the earthly-realm, all who and which are alive on earth),
and of underground beings (the word "underground" is plural in the Greek texts and refers to all the beings which belong or pertain to the underground realm, all who are dead at the present time but will be raised up by Christ in the future),
may bend (would definitely curve – this is a figure referring to every living-being paying homage and being in submission to the name of Jesus, except God of course; refer to I Corinthians 15:20-28),
and every tongue (all/every one of them, everyone speaking in whatever language)
may be in full-agreement (would definitely say the same thing, speak the same words, speak agreement with, assent to with intensity, from inside to outside, completely agree)
that the Lord is Jesus Christ (the Master is Jesus who is Christ – his name now is Lord Jesus Christ)
into the glory of God the Father (with a view to, directed-to, and resulting-in importance, splendor and renown being given to God Who is the Father).
